Visit A Free Museum In Houston

Did you know that some of the city's most interesting museums offer free admission every Thursday? Here are a few great places to check out on your next day off.

The Health Museum (free between 2:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.)

Nestled in the heart of Houston, The Health Museum is one of the most interactive science learning centers of its type. More than 2.5 million visitors have walked through the museum's doors since opening, and according to its website, it is committed to excellence in science educational experiences such as a larger than life journey through the human body and real organ dissections. Fun for all ages, exhibits currently include "Amazing Body," "Human," and "Genome."

Buffalo Soldier Museum (free between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.)

Founded in 2001 by Vietnam veteran Captain Paul Matthews, the Buffalo Soldier Museum is the only museum dedicated to preserving the honor and legacy of the African-American soldiers who served our country from the Vietnam War to present. The museum's website states that historians believe the nickname Buffalo Soldiers began with the Cheyenne Warriors in 1867. It was given both out of respect and for the fierce fighting ability of the 10th Calvary. Eventually, Buffalo Soldiers became a term for all African-American soldiers. Current exhibits include "The Forgotten Faces of Ft. Craig" and "Artillery."

Holocaust Museum Houston (free between 2:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m.)

At the fourth largest Holocaust museum in the United States, visitors remember the innocent victims and learn the survivors' amazing stories through events and powerful exhibits. The museum's permanent exhibit is called "Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers," and it also features changing exhibitions designed to be intellectually challenging and to encourage visitors to study the Holocaust.

Other museums that offer free admission on Thursdays include the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Children's Museum of Houston, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
