Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration
The Chinese Lunar New Year is coming up in early February and 2016 will be the Year of the Monkey! Chinese New Year’s celebrations are often filled with vibrant dancing and colorful representations of the animal representing the year, and the celebration at Houston's Chinese Community Center, to be held on Saturday, February 6th, promises to be no exception.
The Chinese Lunar New Year Festival focuses on the diversity within Asia itself and the multicultural nature of the city of Houston. Recent Lunar New Year’s festivals have hosted more than 15,000 visitors, both from Houston and the surrounding area.
Visitors can see and experience a number of performances by both Asian and Western artists. Past performances have included: Chinese dancing, Korean women’s choirs, demonstrations by the Shaolin Kung Fu Academy, belly dancing, dancing by Nritya Indian Classical Dance, cane dancing by the Chinese Civic Center, a program by the Golden Peacock School of Dance, the North America Youth Chinese Orchestra, and the lion dance by the La Vang Church Team. They have also featured the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Mariachi Imperial Band, Huang Dance Studio, and the Ranchel Ballet Dancing School. Updated performances for this year can be seen on the event website.
Visitors will be able to sample Asian food from participating vendors as well. The Houston Chinese Community Center is a multiethnic group serving all of Houston. For more information, see their web site at www.ccchouston.org.
