Mardi Gras in Houston
Houston may not be in Cajun territory, but that does not mean that Texans don't know how to celebrate Mardi Gras! Come out to the Houston Creole Heritage Festival for delicious food and a great time. It is being held at the Discovery Green in the downtown Houston area.
This year's festival will feature 13 different jazz and creole bands in live concerts. The food vendors will serve New Orleans style foods such as gumbo and fried chicken.
Of course it is not Mardi Gras without a parade! This is a family friendly event and there will be crowds so be sure to get to the parade area early.
The festival revolves around preserving the creole culture, which is a mix of French, African, Native American, and Spanish cultures; a unique mixture of countries that has resulted in its own language and foods. The festival will have cultural booths to educate visitors on Creole life.
Visitors should be ready to spend the day at the festival because the giveaways, games, and concerts will run throughout the entire event. They suggest that people bring their own chairs and blankets for the concert areas and parade area.
So head downtown and, as they say on the bayou, les bon temps rouler (let the good times roll)!
