The Houston Metropolitan Dance Center
Although Houston, TX is perhaps best known to dance aficionados for the Houston Ballet, which is one of the top ballet troupes in the world, it is also the home of the exciting and community-minded Houston Metropolitan Dance Center. The performing company is known as METdance, and they also offer dance classes.
First, the dance company! METdance is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year with several exciting performances. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, they will be presenting a set of dances called Duo. The dancers come together and break apart in a way that emphasizes both the need for close connection and the obstacles to achieving it. There will be performances on February 13th, 14th, and 15th. On April 8th, the performance will be titled Honored Guests. It celebrates choreographers and dancers who have had a significant impact on METdance and will feature the world premiere of a dance by Kate Skarpetowska. The last performance of the 2015-2016 season will take place on June 3rd, with a program called Sizzling Summer Dance. Sizzling Summer Dance is a joyous set of dances. It will also include the choreographer who won the 2016 Emerging Choreographer Commission award. The 2016-2017 season begins in the fall.
If you’d rather do the dance than see the dance (or you love to do both), the METdance has a place for you! A very cool part of it is that they offer introductory classes for folks with absolutely no background in dance. The classes go for 6 weeks, and are given in ballet, hip-hop, jazz dance, and modern dance. There are also classes available for children.
