Naturally flowing water, draping greenery, sunshine and wildlife--this beautiful setting is yours to enjoy if you reside in the Westside Houston area.

Buffalo Bayou is a shady, slow-moving waterway that has been an important aspect of Houston's history since the city's founding in the mid-1800s. In 2002, the city developed parks and trails along the waterway to provide more recreational and entertainment prospects for residents. They did a wonderful job, balancing hiking, biking, and dog friendly trails accessible to everyone.

One of the best things to come of that development is the water input areas around the parks that make the waterway itself accessible. Now activities can occur on the bayou. Imagine floating down that smooth current, inhaling the rich scent of vegetation and warm water!

Bayou City Adventures rents equipment out at Lost Lake (3422 Allen Parkway), providing a choice of tandem kayaks, single kayaks, canoes, or even stand-up paddleboards. For up to 2 hours, families, couples, or singles may move along the Buffalo Bayou "paddle trail", viewing points of interest and wildlife in Buffalo Bayou Park.

You can enjoy a longer day of 3 to 5 hours on the water by paying a $20 fee for a shuttle up the stream. From there, you paddle back to Lost Lake.

Reservations aren't required, just show up at the rental shop Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To ensure the safe return of the equipment and the included paddles and life-jackets, you're required to leave a refundable $50 deposit.

Prefer a guided tour? A Houston Skyline tour by kayak lasts from 3 to 5 hours, running almost 8 miles through Memorial Park, the Hogg Bird Sanctuary, and Buffalo Bayou Park. There are some great sights, including the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony, Eleanor Tinsley Park, and an outstanding view of Houston's impressive downtown skyline. A camera is a must if you want to record a day worth getting up for!
