Houston Dragon Boat Festival
Enjoy a day of sports and arts with the Houston Dragon Boat Festival, the weekend of May 7th and 8th.
Dragon boats are 40-foot-long watercrafts decorated in an ornate style with vibrant colors. The ornamentation resembles the Chinese dragons seen on Lunar New Year dancers and floats (hence, dragon boats). The boats carry a crew of 22 people: 20 paddlers, 1 steersperson, and 1 drummer. They are propelled by the paddlers, who work together to gain speed and momentum.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a regatta where the fastest boat wins. The course ranges from 250 mm to 1000 mm. A new boat will take off every 15 minutes. The staggered courses and the beauty of the boats will be very exciting to watch.
The Dragon Boat Festival is also a cultural event. There will be music all day and cultural presentations.
Finally, it’s a great day to see a scenic part of Houston! The Houston Dragon Boat Festival will be held in Buffalo Bayou, a long waterway that winds through downtown Houston and the ship channel. Buffalo Bayou Park is a 160-acre park that is available for hiking, biking, and boating throughout the year.
The Dragon Boats may inspire you to join a Dragon Boating league - it’s the fastest-growing boating sport today.
