Honoring The American Staple
A great hot dog is a thing of beauty. An American staple for generations to come, hot dogs have been making a comeback as a creative foodie treat! Fortunately, Houston is home to a number of great places to grab a hot dog near our Alexan Enclave Apartments. Here are two of our favorites:
James Coney Island Grill, which was originally established in 1923, is known as one of the oldest restaurants in Houston. Its original location is long gone, but the spirit thrives on in more than 21 locations across the Houston area.
First, the hot dogs themselves are 100% beef Hebrew nationals, a gold standard for any hot dog eatery. JCI also offers Polish sausage, which can be dressed in the same way as any hot dog on the menu.
The menu is divided among classics and gourmet. In the first category, you can enjoy the Texas, with chili, cheddar cheese, mustard and onions. They give a shout to other geographic locales, too, with the Chicago in the traditional column (celery salt, onions, tomatoes, relish, peppers, pickle spear) along with the New York (mustard, sauerkraut).
Gourmet? They’ve got the BBQ Slaw, with jalapeno coleslaw, BBQ pulled pork, fried onion rings (on the dog, not on the side), and BBQ sauce. For geographical resonance, try the Seattle, with spicy mustard, garlic cream cheese, caramelized onions. All the gourmet selections are on artisanal buns.
Speaking of gourmet, Happy Fatz specializes in it. It’s in a delightful old house, which we find quite charming. But Happy Fatz really shines in the types of hot dogs. Try, for example, the St. Louis, with Happy Fatz special baked beans, bacon, grilled onions, and basil garlic mayo. Love Asian food? Then the Lotus Blossom, with fresh spinach, red cabbage, and white cheddar pimento cheese on a jalapeno bun, is for you.
