Live Music In Houston
Houston has a rich musical history that began with jazz and blues and has spanned across the eras of rock, R&B and hip-hop among other genres. These days, you can find a little something of everything being performed in the city. And what better way to sample Houston's musical offerings than with some free performances? We've listed some of the local favorites below.
1) Continental Club (3700 Main St.) This hole-in-the-wall bar features a wide range of performances from Argentine tango to Southern blues. There is occasionally a cover charge, but many of their smaller-name concerts are free.
2) Sounds Like Houston! (1500 McKinney) At various times throughout the year, the University of Houston hosts a show featuring a variety of different bands. This takes place at the Discovery Green Fondren Performance Space, and you can check the current schedule at the Discovery Green website.
3) Emmitt's Place (4852 Benning Dr.) Emmitt's offers free live music weekly at their Monday Night Jam. The mic is open to local musicians to show their stuff, and if you're so inclined, you can take a turn on stage too! There's no cover charge and specials on drinks while the music is going.
4) The Shepherd School of Music (6100 Main St.) Most concerts put on by the students at the Shepherd School of Music are free to the public. Performances are held periodically throughout the school year, and you can check their online calendar to see what is coming up.
