Roller Derby In Houston
Roller derby competitions have become increasingly popular over the last decade. Some date the surge in popularity to the release of the movie Whip It in 2009. (We also point out that Texas was the locale for the 2006 reality series Rollergirls, one of many films on roller derby released in the past decade.)
Others simply say what becomes old (roller derby in the 1970s and 1980s) becomes new again, such as the recent rise of craft beer or artisanal ice cream becoming popular decades after home-made beer and ice cream had left the supermarkets.
Regardless of the reason for its popularity, roller derby — races and match-ups between two teams of skaters — is an incredibly easy to understand and exciting sport to watch. Watch it nearby at the Houston Roller Derby! They host a league, over 120 skaters strong. The league is made up of several home teams, such as The Bayou City Bosses, The Brawlers, The Valkyries and The Psych Ward Sirens. There are also two teams that travel: The Houston All-Stars and The Knockouts (B-team).
If you want to play instead of just watch, there are plenty of opportunities to do that as well. There are two methods. One is to show up at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Houston Indoor Sports and join the Recreation League. All skaters wanting to learn are welcome. The other is to go to training camps and tryouts, which are held periodically.
Bouts take place at Revention Music Center, 520 Texas Avenue in Houston.
