The Armand Bayou Nature Center is the Country's Largest Urban Wilderness Preserve
An easy drive from Alexan Enclave Apartments is a destination that strives to reconnect people to nature.
We are talking about the Armand Bayou Nature Center, and it is the largest urban wilderness preserve in the United States.
The center features beautiful scenery and is home to more than 310 species of birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians.
There is much to see and do including:
Guided Canoe Tours (2nd and 4th Saturdays)
Paddle along the bayou with a knowledgeable guide. The adventure is approximately two to three miles round trip, and along the way, you will enjoy wildlife watching and wetland education. Deer often start their day along the water's edge, and dozens of bird species are also seen. Both beginning and experienced canoeists are welcome, and a brief orientation kicks off the fun.
Guided Photo Hikes (offered monthly)
The guided photo hikes begin with an overview of the nature center to spark creativity. The native flora changes with the seasons and the guides make identifications during the walk. Animals such as coyotes and bobcats may also be spotted.
Step back in time at the 1800s farm site. On the weekends, volunteers demonstrate activities common to daily life on a nineteenth-century farm in southeast Texas. The demonstrations rotate and may include spinning, carpentry, and rope making.
The Bat hikes are perfect for anyone looking for something different to do when the sun goes down. Bats are critical to many ecosystems around the world, and the knowledgeable guides dispel some common myths about these creatures and reveal the truth about their nature.
