Space Center Houston is One of the City's Top Attractions
Do you enjoy learning about space?
If so, head to Space Center Houston where you'll experience out-of-this-world fun.
The center is one of the city's top attractions, and it features more than 400 artifacts, permanent and traveling exhibits, and theaters that highlight the country's human space-flight program.
Permanent exhibits include:
The Astronaut Gallery features one of the most comprehensive collections of astronaut apparel and spacesuits. One of the highlights is Kathryn Sullivan's Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU). She was the first American woman to accomplish a spacewalk, and during her mission, she wore an EMU. These suits were designed to be reused, and they provided thermal protection, pressure, and communication to the spacewalking astronaut.
Renowned for showcasing spacecraft and national treasures, the Starship Gallery is not to be missed. The display includes Gemini V, launch & entry suits, and a lunar roving trainer.
Another highlight is the Apollo 17 Command Module. It's one of only nineteen command modules on view in the United States, and on its final mission, Harrison Schmitt became the first scientist to travel into space. Before undergoing astronaut training, he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey.
Independence Plaza offers a one-of-a-kind experience as it's where visitors can climb aboard the shuttle replica Independence. It's mounted on the top of the NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft (SCA) and is the only shuttle mounted on an SCA that welcomes the public. It is a great way to learn how the astronauts piloted the orbiter during missions and to see how tight the living quarters were on the mid-deck.
