An easy drive from Alexan Enclave is a destination dedicated to the art of photography.

We're talking about the Houston Center for Photography, and since its establishment in 1981, it has grown to become an exemplary fine art organization.

The center's mission is to increase society's appreciation for taking photographs, and it offers exhibitions and more than 300 classes and workshops every year.

Highlights include:

Upcoming Exhibitions

Print Auction 2019 (January 25 through February 25)

The print auction is an annual event where artists and galleries from around the globe contribute high-quality works. More than sixty mid-career and established photographers are featured in the exhibit, and proceeds from the auction benefit the center's operating fund.

The Learning Center

At The Learning Center, photographers of all abilities can enhance their skills through fun classes. They're taught by highly trained instructors, and sessions over the next few weeks include:

Photography I (January 22 & 29, & February 5, 12, & 19)

Photography I is an understanding of photography as a medium of expression and creative practice. It covers basic concepts, exposure, and composition among other topics. Students also look closely at historically significant photographs as a way to deconstruct visual composition.

Introduction to the Moving Image (January 31 & February 7, 14, 21, & 28)

Introduction to the Moving Image offers the fundamental techniques and concepts for filming, editing, and producing video. Through hands-on projects, students will develop skills in areas such as camera operation, lighting, and audio recording.

Night Photography (February 9, 16, 23, & March 2)

Night Photography is an introductory course that teaches students how to capture incredible images once the sun goes down. Through both demonstrations and hands-on experiences, participants will navigate the various types of lighting scenarios.
