The Best Places To Play Pickleball in Houston
Are you looking for something different to do this weekend?
Then consider playing pickleball.
History of the Sport
In 1965, Congressman Joel Pritchard and two of his friends returned home from playing golf to find their kids bored and looking for something to do. They found tennis rackets and a wiffle ball and lowered the net on a badminton court.
That's how pickleball was born, and over the next several days, both the kids and adults alike established the rules that are still followed today.
Places to Play
More than two million people enjoy pickleball in the United States, and the best courts around Houston include:
Houston Badminton Center
Established in 2015, the Houston Badminton Center is a premier venue for badminton, pickleball, and table tennis. Its mission is to promote fitness through fun and sport, and all athletic abilities are welcome. Pickleball open-play is offered weekdays between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and the center also hosts mixers and tournaments throughout the year.
Mission City Recreation and Tennis Center
Nestled in nearby Mission City, the Recreation and Tennis Center spans more than 24,000 square feet. It features an attentive staff and quality equipment, and non-members are invited to join the fun for just five dollars a visit. The pickleball court is open for daily play three days a week, and all skill levels can pick up a racket.
D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA
For 125 years, the YMCA of the Greater Houston area has been where residents can be social while embracing a healthy, active lifestyle. At the D. Bradley McWilliams location, pickleball is played four days a week, and lessons are required for all new players.
