Don't Miss the Theater District Houston Open House
On August 26th, locals and visitors alike can enjoy a festival filled with exciting performances and backstage tours.
We're talking about the Theater District Houston Open House, and it marks the beginning of the fall performing arts season.
The district spans seventeen blocks, and Houston is one of only five cities in the country that features permanent professional theater companies in each of the major performing arts disciplines.
Five venues are participating in the open house including:
When a $46.5 million renovation was completed during the 2014-15 season, the Alley Theatre became known as one of the country's most technically advanced nonprofit theater companies. Led by Interim Artistic Director James Black, it creates innovative productions of classics, premieres, and neglected modern plays. During the Alley's first sixty years, there were both struggles and triumphs, and it's now the city's only major performing arts company to own its own building.
Wortham Theater Center
Encompassing nearly 438,000 square feet, the Wortham Theater Center has welcomed more than eight million people since 1987. Called a masterful, creative playground, it's the home of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera. The center was built at the height of the 1980s oil bust and was funded solely by private donations. At the time, it was the first major opera house constructed in the United States in over 25 years.
Jones Hall for the Performing Arts
Spanning an entire city block, Jones Hall opened in 1966 and seats more than 2,900 patrons. With its travertine marble facade, brilliantly lit grand entrance, and an exterior rectangle featuring eight-story columns, it's no wonder the hall won the American Institute of Architects' Honor Award in 1967. The cozy auditorium is complete with golden teak walls and vibrant red seats, and visitors can watch comedians, musicians, and much more.
