Find the Best Ingredients at a Specialty Food Store
Over the last few years, several specialty food stores have opened in Houston which means the city has joined the likes of Portland and San Francisco when it comes to offering farm-fresh food in the heart of a major metropolitan area.
Whether you need to buy meat, produce, or spices, you can find these items and more at the following shops:
The Houston Dairymaids is the only cheese shop in the city, and it has welcomed shoppers since 2012. The shop features more than 150 cheeses from the United States and beyond, and offers a free tasting of six kinds of cheese daily. The selection also includes honey, olives, and fresh bread from the Slow Dough Bakery.
Phoenicia Specialty Foods
With more than ten thousand products from around the world, Phoenicia offers a one-stop gourmet, international food experience. The store is a dream that began from humble beginnings in the early 1980s when Bob and Arpi Tcholakian opened Phoenicia Deli, a Mediterranean-style delicatessen. In 2006, the couple established the specialty foods store, and the shelves are stocked with products such as olive oils, Armenian coffee, Moroccan olives, and so much more.
Rice Farmers Market
Held every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Rice Farmers Market strives to make locally grown food available to as many people as possible. Nearly all of the products offered were produced in a sustainable manner, which means they retain their nutritional value without the health and environmental costs of artificial pesticides or fertilizers. Vendors include Atkinson Farm, Brenham Kitchens, and Rio Grande Organics.
